Why Ogg Theora?
Ogg is a file type that acts as a media container. Various media encoding types can be used in an Ogg container, such as Vorbis (sound), Theora (video), and others. The Ogg formats are typically “open,” meaning that they are unencumbered by intellectual property constraints, and anyone can freely use them. (This is quite different from many proprietary formats, such as mp3, for which software to decode mp3’s is freely availabe, but mp3 encoding is a protected and controlled technology.)
Open media formats make for better flexibility for end users, help keep player vendors like Apple and Microsoft from excercising undo control on media markets, and give developers freedom to create new media software and hardware that is compatible with existing digital media.
